Biography

Dinesh Kumar Sharma retired as Assistant Professor from Department of ENT, Government Medical College Amritsar (GMCA) in India in November 2014. He obtained his MBBS degree from GMCA in the year 1979 and Master of Surgery (MS) in the specialty of ENT from the same institution in the year 1989. He also obtained Hearing Instrument Specialist (HIS) Diploma from Conestoga College located in Kitchener (Canada) in the year 2016. He passed the International Licensing Examination (ILE) in January 2020.

He has more than thirteen years of teaching experience from GMCA where he taught undergraduate (UG) medical (MBBS) students and postgraduate (PG) students pursuing MS (ENT) program. He has supervised more than a dozen PG thesis projects both as principal and co-supervisor. He has contributed a chapter entitled ‘Audiological assessment in Meniere’s Disease’ in the book ‘Up to Date on Meniere's Disease’ published by InTechOpen. The chapter has recorded more than 2900 downloads since October 2017.   He also contributed fifteen plus scientific research papers in international and Indian medical journals. His primary research interests are in the subject of otology. His research topics include Meniere’s Disease, sudden sensorineural hearing loss, tinnitus, and chronic suppurative otitis media.

He has written five books for HIS program students and practicing hearing instrument practitioners. These books intend to improve their clinical skills, understanding of anatomy & physiology of the ear and common disorders of the ears. He has also written two books for medical students (both UG and PG).

Dinesh was born and spent his early childhood in Nangal Township. Nangal, a small town is located on the foothills of Shivalik mountain range on the banks of river Sutlej. The township was built to provide logistic support to the construction of world-famous Bhakra Dam. His family shifted to holy city of Amritsar which is known all over the world for divine Golden Temple.

After completing school and college education from prestigious DAV institutions he joined GMCA in 1974. After graduating he joined Punjab Civil Medical Services (PCMS). He again joined GMCA in 1987 and obtained MS (ENT) degree in 1989.

He served as Registrar in Department of ENT GMCA for a period of five years and in the year 2006 he was elevated as Assistant Professor (AP). He served as AP till November 2014.  He has performed over 1000 major ENT surgeries including mastoidectomies, tympanoplasties, and Septorhinoplasty. He has attended a number of workshops on temporal bone dissection and rhinoplasty.

He was nominated to the Senate of Baba Faid University of Health Sciences, Faridkot. As a Senator he was instrumental in restarting PG Diploma courses in medical colleges of Punjab. He is also credited with introducing reforms in PG teaching.

In the year 1997 he was selected to serve as Surveillance Medical Officer in National Polio Surveillance Project India. The project was designed and managed by World Health Organization (WHO). Dinesh served in the most challenging state of India, Uttar Pradesh. His work was highly appreciated by WHO for having made a significant contribution towards eradication of poliomyelitis in India.

He has volunteered with Health and Development Networks Thailand as Key Correspondent (KC) and received formal training in health journalism. As a KC he covered 15th International AIDS Conference and Global Fund for TB, AIDS, and Malaria (GFTAM) conference in Bangkok and StopTB conference in New Delhi. He also received training in medical writing at an international workshop held in Kathmandu, Nepal. He himself set up an NGO, Health and Development Initiative-India. It partnered with StopTB and published a newsletter TB News from India.

The wide-ranging experience he possesses in medical teaching, research work, patient care, medical writing, emergency and elective ENT surgery has provided him an insight into designing his books. These books successfully meet the teaching needs of his target audience whether they are hearing instrument practitioners (HIS), medical students, ENT residents, or audiologists.

Dinesh is happily married and is leading a retired life in Kitchener city of Canada. His wife Neelam was also a teacher in India. He has two daughters Devika and Malvika and a son Tushar. He is blessed with two adorable grandsons Reyaan Gill and Shubh Gill.

His hobbies include poetry writing and listening to all genres of music. He has published a collection of his poems in Hindi. He has also written a book which contains his childhood memories.
